This month, we are going to jump into a weather-sensitive topic, since the cold is seeping in and what we affectionately refer to as “jump starting season” is upon us. Of course, the need for jump starting knows no season. We just had an Amazon driver at the end of our driveway on an 80˚ day with a totally dead battery, so it truly can happen anytime (btw, we had him started and on his way in less than 3 minutes). But, we’re headed into the time of year where the need for jump starting is more prevalent, so the topic of charging your unit is more timely right about now.
The first thing to remember is that charging your jump starter more often is always better than doing it too little. Our jump starter batteries (lead acid or lithium) have no memory issues, so can’t be harmed or diminished by charging them when the battery is relatively full. Conversely, not charging them when they need it can be very damaging to the battery. So, give it a charge.
The second thing to remember is that, when jump starting, you always want the jump starter’s State of Charge (SoC) to be above 75%. This ensures that the unit’s full power is available to you as you attempt to start a disabled vehicle’s battery. So, give it a charge.
The third thing to remember is that all current Jump-N-Carry and Booster PAC jump starter models can be connected to AC power indefinitely without adverse consequences. They won’t overcharge or damage the battery as a result of continuous connection. This has been true for over 10 years now (and true since the start on many models). If you have an older unit and wonder if the applies to you, the easiest check is to see if your warning label has an icon of a BC in a circle on it. If so, you’re good. If not, you need to manage your charge, in which case, we recommend putting it on the charger in the evening and taking it off in the morning. So, give it a charge.
Last But Not Leaset
The final thing to remember is that, even when your unit looks like it’s at or near full charge, we recommend charging it every 90 days. Again, this applies to both lead acid powered or lithium powered units. This ensures your unit is getting what it needs and that you get the longest possible life from it, since regular, consistent charging is the number one predictor of long unit life. So, give it a charge.
