Always Check the VIN

This is one of those “always cover the basics” reminders, but it is good one with a great example of how failing to check the simple things can lead to trouble and waste a lot of time. Here, Ryan from Indiana uses the example of a mismatched PCM causing a no start and a bunch of other issues to remind those performing module reprogramming to always check the VIN of a replacement module before trying to reprogram it.

As he notes, “After a good half hour of scratching my head, I realized what had happened: the VIN that SPS pulled from the [Reman PCM] was not the VIN of the vehicle… The Reman PCM still contained the VIN from the donor vehicle and was not wiped by the rebuilder, therefore the flash was not correct for the vehicle…” His assumption was that the Reman PCM would have been wiped clean during the Reman process. When it turned out not to be, it created a bunch of extra work to get it resolved.
