Is There Any Such Thing as a Purely Mechanical Repair?

This month, we’re back to asking a fundamental question about today’s repair environment, “Is there any such thing as a purely mechanical repair on a late model vehicle?” The question was prompted by a recent case study posted on the Diagnostic Network forum by Travis in Arizona.

In it, he recounted a repair dilemma he faced on a 2009 Nissan Sentra with Intelligent Key system, where the steering lock would not disengage, no matter how you interacted with the vehicle. No matter what method was attempted, the ignition would not turn.

He reviewed his codes (B2013), dove into the service information, reviewed previous posts on diag.net and more, but kept coming up short. In fact, some of the resources he consulted suggested changing a part that wasn’t the root cause of the issue. As he dug in, he found the culprit. As you might imagine, this seemingly mechanical error had a decidedly electronic root cause. It’s definitely worth a read.
