Lurking Mercedes Issue – Did You Know This Existed?

Here’s a really interesting one from Diagnostic Network, provided by Vladyslav in Ukraine, of all places. In it, he recounts a problematic 2017 Mercedes E300 (W213) that would start each time on the first attempt, but wouldn’t start if it was turned off and a restart was attempted. He digs into it in detail, and the photo provides a clue to the ultimate culprit, but it took some serious sleuthing to get to the bottom of it.

Here’s how he laid out the symptoms:

The engine starts only once. If you turn it off, the next time you press the Start/Stop button, the ignition turns on, but there is no starter cranking. The problem is resolved only after disconnecting the main battery terminal, after which the cycle repeats. Park Brake malfunction illuminates.”

After several false leads, he was able to get to the root cause, which was a bit of a surprise, based on the error codes he was getting and the data he pulled from the vehicle. If you regularly work on these vehicles, this would be a good one to keep in your reference folder.
